Jack Reacher

"Jack Reacher" is an enjoyable, old-school detective tale that delivers on simply charged thrills. We have a gun for hire (Tom Cruise in the titular role) and a fantastic villain (the deliciously wicked Werner Herzog). Based on the novel series by Lee Child, the film delivers a charismatic performance from Cruise, who is in his most "Mission: Impossible" mode without actually being in a "Mission: Impossible" film. However, the film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Cruise on both the fifth and sixth "Mission: Impossible" films.

The sequences are satisfying, the dialogue is snappy, and the pacing is tight, making "Jack Reacher" a memorable action thriller that pales in comparison to many of its peers, notably the aforementioned "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Despite the pitfalls of this comparison, "Jack Reacher" is still compelling enough to stand on its own two feet.

As always, the performance by Cruise drives the action film home. It's confident and cocky, his bravado blazing a trail for poppy entertainment that never flops. Sometimes, I wish the man would only do action films from this point forward. He's a crazy person, always willing to do his own stunts and go the distance, which makes him the perfect fit for the genre.

Bonus features on the 4K Ultra HD disc include commentaries from Cruise, McQuarrie and composer Joe Kraemer, while the Blu-ray disc includes carry-over bonus featurettes from the previous release.
