GLAAD Report Finds Meta Failed to Moderate 'Extreme' Anti-Trans Hate Platforms

GLAAD has released a damning report documenting Meta's failure to moderate "extreme" anti-trans content across its social media platforms, including Facebook, Threads and Instagram.
In a press release, GLAAD said it found numerous instances in which there was "disturbing anti-trans content targeting transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people" distributed across Meta's social media platforms with impunity.
The posts included dehumanizing names for trans people, including "satanic," "sexual predators," "terrorists," "mentally ill," "perverts," and "tr*nnies." Other content included targeted harassment of trans individuals and promoted references to "conversion therapy" and calls for "eradication."
All of such content is allegedly prohibited under Meta's Community Standards, and yet it was allowed to go forward.
Titled "Unsafe: Meta Fails to Moderate Extreme Anti-trans Hate Across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads," the report is a follow up to GLAAD's June 2023 open letter from LGBTQ celebrities and allies urging meta to address anti-trans hate on its platforms.
The report is a follow up to a June 2023 LGBTQ Celebrities & Allies open letter facilitated by GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign, which called on social media platforms, including Meta, to address the epidemic of anti-trans hate on its platforms.
"GLAAD, HRC, and 250+ LGBTQ celebrities and allies urged Meta nine months ago to create and share a plan to address the epidemic of anti-trans hate on their platforms," said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. "The company's ongoing failure to enforce its own policies against anti-LGBTQ, and especially anti-trans hate is simply unacceptable. The ongoing inaction and silence is an active choice, showing that Meta is not living up to its company values and most importantly, is not protecting its trans and gender nonconforming users."
