With a holiday season like no other, artists are in a more reflective mood in the songs they are choosing to perform, which may be why "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is getting more attention this season. Written at the height of the Second World War, another time when Americans were forced to separate due to situations beyond their control, the lines, "I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams..." takes on new meaning this year.

Out singer Steve Grand taps into the song's bittersweet message and updates it in his cover version. He calls the song "follow-up video to my 2015 music video, 'All I Want for Christmas is You,'" which featured Trevor LaPaglia. In the new video, the couple are separated because of COVID – LaPaglia in LA and Grand in at home in Chicago. The footage of the couple together is taken from the earlier video.

In the earlier cover of the Mariah Carey song the video featured the couple putting up a Christmas tree and get under the mistletoe. In the new version they are seen together in bed, but in a split-screen.
