Becky Hammon Inducted Into NY Liberty Ring of Honor

The New York Liberty inducted Becky Hammon into its Ring of Honor with an official ceremony during halftime of its game against the Seattle Storm on Sunday, August 2, at Madison Square Garden at 3 p.m.

"When I first came here in 1989 with my bangs all poofed out I knew when I arrived that this city would either make or break me, and you guys made me," said Hamon. "And I have so much pride putting that NY Liberty jersey on and representing this amazing city, the greatest city the world."

Previous Ring of Honor inductees Teresa Weatherspoon, Sue Wicks and Kym Hampton were in attendance.

Hammon signed with the Liberty as an undrafted free agent on May 19, 1999, and played for New York until 2006. She helped lead the franchise to three WNBA Finals appearances (1999, 2000, 2002), and New York was within a game of capturing a WNBA title in 1999. Hammon ranks second in franchise history in games played (227) and 3-point field goals (331) and is third on the all-time scoring list (2,367 points).

Hammon/Inspiring Women Night, presented by UPS, will feature a free replica ring giveaway to the first 5,000 fans.

The New York Liberty is off to its best start since the 2001 season with a 12-5 record, and currently holds a one-game lead for first place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Liberty has a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2010 and is 6-2 at Madison Square Garden this season.

"I just want you guys to know I'm from South Dakota but my mom would slap me silly if I forgot my roots -- and you are part of my roots," said Hammon. "You helped me take a hit and get back up and keep moving forward. With every failure I faced I didn't dwell on it but learned from it and it helped make me better. You guys in New York: thank you very much; you loved me first."
