Right Wing Group Attempts to 'Stick it' to HRC
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Last week radical right-wing anti-gay hate group MassResistance launched a promotional movement against the Human Rights Campaign through the sale of stickers meant to ridicule the gay advocacy group's trademark blue square sticker with a yellow equality symbol.
A page on the MassResistance website reads, "Tired of having the homosexual 'equal' sign always thrown in your face? Stick it back at them - and counter the gay agenda with MassResistance's stickers." The stickers the website is referring to, are crudely designed lavender oval shaped images featuring a white equality symbol with a slash through it.
The page goes on to say, "The concept of 'equal' is the building block of the homosexual movement's overall propaganda campaign. Simply put, homosexuality must be considered "equal" to normal heterosexuality throughout society, on all levels of human activity." Hence, the slash through the equal sign.
Their website boasts that their symbol "..fits perfectly on your car between your 'Impeach Obama' and 'NRA' stickers."
Self-described as a "pro-family activist group," MassResistance is a Waltham, Massachusetts-based anti-gay group that promotes socially conservative positions on issues relating to homosexuality, abortion, anti-bullying, gun control, the transgender community and same-sex marriage.
In 1996, less than a year after founding the far right-wing group, MassResistance's leader Brian Camenker crusaded against suicide prevention initiatives aimed at gay youth, claiming that the programs were "put together by homosexual activists to normalize homosexuality." The group has also asserted that organizations which support school anti-bullying programs actually want to "lure children into homosexuality and, very possibly, sadomasochism," a sentiment that was quoted by American Family Association Radio pundit Bryan Fischer.
In May, after Nigeria's legislature passed an anti-gay law similar to Russia's propaganda law, but with far steeper punishments, MassResistance publicly praised the African nation for "taking bold steps to fight back" against attempts "to subvert public morality."
The organization, which was critical of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for maintaining what they saw as liberal positions on LGBT rights and family planning during his term in office, has been designated as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Ironically, while MassResistance is selling their bumper stickers by saying "have some fun countering the gay agenda," supporters of said agenda can have fun by merely observing the hate group's lack of rudimentary math skills. If MassResistance's intention on their lavender and white slashed equals sign was to characterize gay inequality, their slash is going in the wrong direction to denote "does not equal."
