Everything You Wanted To Know About Gay Porn Stars But Were Afraid To Ask
Phil Hall READ TIME: 1 MIN.
This seven-episode series promises a "revealing look at a taboo world," with "sixteen of the hottest adult film stars." Well, "hottest" is a matter of opinion, and there is very little here that qualifies as a "revealing look."
Instead, what we have is an excessively verbose presentation where gay porn actors talk about their lives. And talk, and talk, and talk, and talk. A lack of consistency in raconteur skills throws the production into constant confusion--some of the men provide compelling recollections of harrowing situations, while others can barely keep the conversation afloat.
So what gets discussed? Nothing very surprising: how the men got into the skin flick business, where they got their performer names, the challenges of having sex on camera for a living, problems with maintaining relationships, how their families feel about their work, etc. While some of this might have been edited efficiently into a brisk 60-minute documentary, it becomes monotonous when stretched over 232 minutes.
Even worse, the production comes across as a cheapjack affair. Most of the men sit shirtless against a white wall while weird shadows run across some of their faces. The quality of the sound recording is occasionally weak, which only adds to the confusion. Every now and then, dumb clips from old anti-gay films are inserted for comedy relief--but footage of the men in performance is conspicuously absent.
Really, productions like this give gay porn a bad name.
