There is a surprise queer character in Disney+'s upcoming "Cruella" film — at least according to the actor John McCrea, who plays Cruella de Vil's fashionable friend.

As reported by Cinema Blend, the actor was asked if his character was, in fact, an LGBTQ character, and he had this to say: "It depends on who you're asking I suppose - but for me, yes, it's official: he's queer."

Set in '70s London, McCrea, who also appeared in the gay drama "God's Own Country," plays "Artie" the owner of a vintage shop who becomes pals with Cruella (Emma Stone) over a mutual love of fashion.

Apparently, in one of the original "Cruella" film scripts, his character was written as a drag queen. "So I think he was always inte nded to be queer-representing I suppose, or somehow a member of the LGBTQ community," McCrea told Attitude. "I imagine that was always the case."

Calls for more LGBTQ representation in Disney films are growing louder as of late. Fans say they are ready for a gay superhero, and so far the only notable LGBTQ character in a Disney film has been in 2017's "Beauty and the Beast" when LeFou dances with a man at the end of the film.

McCrea says "Artie" stands out because he's not a minor bit character or used as a tired trope.

"We don't see him falling in love; there's no social aspect to the character. It's not beating you on the head with a stick. But his lifestyle is fabulous, he loves his life and it was so fun to play him," McCrea told Attitude. "If I had a character growing up like that to watch on the screen I would've fallen in love. Also with the idea that he's completely well-adjusted, very happy, and has a real lust for life. Those are things I'd find so exciting."

"Cruella" hits Disney+ Premier Access and theaters on Friday. Will you be watching?
