The original Black Panther, Grace Jones, is captured in Sophie Fiennes slice-of-life documentary "Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami."

Bami is a flat, round Jamaican bread made of cassava (yucca) that is soaked in milk or water and fried. Jones is also a Jamaican delicacy who has cultivated her consumption for decades.

The 69-year-old is the definition of diva: Demanding, yet deserving. She was raised by an abusive step-grandfather in Jamaica's Spanish Town, a "whole other world," until she was 13 when she was finally reunited with her parents in Syracuse, New York.

But the emotional scars remained. She became a New York model, then moved into singing and acting, where a teacher noted that her stage energy came from that dark, male place from which she escaped.

Jones broke boundaries, blending art and fashion, pop and disco, and she fought to be treated as equal to the male iconoclasts like David Bowie.

She still struggles, and the nontraditional documentary captures snippets of her visiting family on the island, reminiscing about the leather straps used on her and her siblings, and playing jacks; Paris (where she's lived and met her son's father) to record a video for her new album; and concert footage featuring hits "Slave to the Rhythm," "Warm Leatherette," "Amazing Grace," and "Love is the Drug (and I need to score)."

Wearing a black corset, a stunning array of architectural hats and masks, and makeup, which she mostly applies herself on those dramatic cheekbones, she's got legs for days as she struts the stage, also playing a tambourine, large cymbals and works a hula-hoop.

In this two-hour deconstruction of her personal and working life, she confesses to being a gypsy and admits, "sometimes you have to be a high-flying bitch."

A fan asks, "Will you do another movie?"

She responds, "My own."

This is that film, and it's bittersweet, funny, irreverent, poignant, and wild, daring audiences to try and keep up with the Jones.
