The Mummy

It was up to action hero Tom Cruise to carry a long-dormant movie franchise and bring it back to life a few months ago. With an $80 million box office gross based on an estimated budget of over $120 million, it looks like this version of "The Mummy" probably won't carry on the legacy of what's come before it.

This viewer has never seen any incarnation of "The Mummy," but what I watched in this version was to witness an usually reliable actor fumble his way through a phoned-in performance. His action stunts can be commended and the quite often thrilling set pieces can be fun to watch also. But with hokey one-liner jokes and a couple of scenes which show the former hot-throb Cruise almost naked, this "Mummy" is very tough to take too seriously.

If you were really a big fan of "The Mummy 2017," by all means purchase this Blu-ray from Universal. Not only will you get a stunning 4k high-definition presentation, you'll get a whopping 11 bonus features to watch. They include:

"Cruise & Kurtzman: A Conversation Rooted in Reality" - one of many interview segments with Cruise where he talks about the making of "The Mummy"

"Life in Zero-G: Creating the Plane Crash" - this featurette shows how the thrilling plane crash sequence was filmed, arguably the best and most memorable scene in "The Mummy"

"Meet Ahmanet" - actress Sofia Boutella talks about what it was like to play the mummy monster

"Cruise in Action" - the many stunts that Cruise performs in the film get examined

"Becoming Jekyll and Hyde" - filmmakers talk about Russell Crowe and how he was chosen to play these dual roles
